How Steve Jobs Will Destroy Civilization

September 1, 2012 Steve Jobs unveils the Apple TV, a device which allows “consumers” to relieve themselves of the burden of owning movies and television shows. Previously, if people wanted to possess a movie or a television series, they would be forced buy a video cassette or DVD version, or they would have to suffer the inconvenience of recording these events on a tape or digital video recorder. Once either version was in hand, then, via direct playback or by running the recording, consumers could then watch these programs as many times as desired. The Apple TV changes everything. In...

Steve Jobs Is Stunned (And Scared?) By Android's Growth

During yesterday's iPod/Apple TV event Steve Jobs (all but) literally said he cannot believe how fast Android is growing. He boasted of Apple's success with iOS devices (iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone) saying Apple sees 230,000 new activations of iOS devices on a daily basis. That's pretty impressive, as it gives Apple a run rate of 84 million iOS devices on an annual basis. After throwing out Apple's stats, Jobs said, "we think we're ahead of everyone else," because, "we think some our friends are counting upgrades in their numbers." In other words, Steve Jobs is saying, "I can't believe that...

UNOFFICIAL: iPad Absolutely Transformational…

I’m flagging this as UNOFFICIAL because it’s not my intent to convey any formal Gartner positions here, only a few key personal observations. I don’t buy every new technology that comes along (even my wife would begrudgingly agree but argue that I buy too many…). And I avoided the iPad siren call at announcement time. It was at the Enterprise 2.0 conference in Boston in June (and a few other events in roughly the same timeframe) that I was seduced. A lot of folks, particularly sales and marketing types, were using them. So I went out and bought a 3G...

Dell may have struck out with new tablet 'Streak'

Well, Dell made it out of the gate with one of the first Android-powered tablets and the result is a resounding thud. The Dell "Streak" offers a 5-inch screen, weighs about 8 ounces and has a 5-megapixel camera. It measures 6 inches by 3 inches, and therein lies its main issue. What is it? It's not an iPad, which is clearly like a magazine page. When you hold an iPad, it's not a phone. It's a tablet. It is big. It is not something you'd make a phone call on. It's something you take notes on, or read a book...

Fat fingered sumo wrestlers given iPads (instead of cellphones...)

The Japan Sumo Association is distributing about 60 iPads among all the 51 training stables and top association officials from this week to help improve communication. "It seems rather easy to use," association chief Hanaregoma. "Sending emails was very easy." ...The iPad was chosen because the sumo association believed the device was big enough to cater to wrestler's fat fingers, unlike the smaller keys on mobile phones, according to reports. Sumo officials decided to go digital and buy iPads as the ancient sport attempts to mend its ways after scandals over wrestlers' ties with gangsters and illegal gambling, match-fixing and...

So Much for Stagnating Mac Growth

I have to constantly remind myself that sales estimates can be all over the place, so when a recent report suggested Macs sales weren’t improving as fast as some expected, I was ready to attribute that state of affairs to the extreme success of the iPad. However, it now appears that Mac sales may actually be growing faster than previously believed. There’s a story in this week’s issue of Fortune that, in June, sales of new Macs to the enterprise actually soared nearly 50%, about three times higher than the rest of the PC industry. In addition, sales to government...

Apple applies for patent to kill jailbroken devices

Apple is apparently ramping up its battle to prevent iPhone and iPod owners from jailbreaking their devices. The company has applied for a patent, titled "Systems and Methods for Identifying Unauthorized Users of an Electronic Device," that covers a series of security measures to automatically protect devices from thieves and other "unauthorized users." Unauthorized users apparently applies to those who engage in jailbreaking, which allows devices to run apps not approved by the company producing the operating system--such as Apple, the main target of such bypasses.
